Folly Beach Wahine Classic Results .....
Folly Beach, June 6th, 2006...
Recap of 2006's event:
The 2006 Folly Beach Wahine Classic took place
June 3 & 4, in fun 2-3 ft. surf at the Washout on Folly Beach.
Over 90 women and girls participated making this the largest contest
in the event's 6 year history. Competition heats were held in shortboard,
longboard, novice, bodyboard, and one design (a division where all
competitors ride the same board -this year a 7'6 Blue Surfboard
donated by Global Surf Industries).
A new addition to this years event was the Push and Surf Division
where wahines under 12 could enjoy the waves with the help of a
parent. The little ones eagerly surfed for the largest audience
of the weekend and all received 1st place trophies for their efforts.
Documenting all the action from the beach was world
renowned photographer Aaron
Chang; his presence at the
Folly Beach Wahine Classic made everyone involved feel like a star.
Aaron added much to the spirit of the event by preparing a slideshow
of Saturday's action for the competitors, sponsors, family, and
friends to view at the Saturday night wahine party, held on the
Barrier Islands Party Deck . He also shared an amazing slideshow
entitled "Living in the Light" that inspired the crowd
with beautiful images of life in action.
Aaron took the time to autograph posters under the
Point Break Surf Shop tent on Sunday, and his efforts over the weekend
were very much appreciated. To see Aaron's images from this weekend

Thanks to Aaron
Chang International and Surfingthemag.com
for sponsoring Aaron's trip to Folly, and locally to Becky &
David Baird & their family for their gracious hospitality.
Thanks to our local surf shops, Point Break Surf Shop,
McKevlin's Surf Shop, Ocean Surf Shop, Quiksilver Surf Shop,
Parrot Surf Shop & Beach Town Surf Shak for their generous sponsorship
and support.
Thanks to Bert's Market, Dolphin Deli, Grills Gone Wild, The Lost
Dog & Woody's Pizza for feeding us all weekend.
The Christian Surfers of Charleston hooked us up with coffee and
Krispy Kreme doughnuts as usual. Thanks!
Throughout the weekend there was lots of action on the beach as
well as in the water. Sponsor tents on the beach offered everything
from samples of exotic teas by Teavana, a surf clinic by Surf Diva,
information from organizations like Surfrider Foundation and
Surf Aid International, and giveaways of all kinds. The event raffle
featured fabulous prizes like surfboards from Surftech,
Liquid Shredder Soft Surfboards, and Kinetic Surfboards, a month
of free yoga with Jenny Brown from Island Yoga, an original painting
by
Moira Gil John, a gift pack from Surf Diva, and salon gift certificates
from Elysium Salon in Charleston.
As the surfing heats wrapped up on Sunday the action on the beach
heated up with a Capoeira demonstration by a group from
Capoeira of Charleston that included local wahines Sarah Mitchell
& Maria Dunlap. Their display of strength, beauty, and control
was a
wonderful compliment to a weekend dedicated to the
soul of surfing.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to make this a really fun weekend
for all of us!
